HIM has a great catalog of songs already, so I've been thinking what is their most underrated/overrated song? Songs you can't stop listening to but never gets performed live or any recognition, or songs you can do without but seems to get high praise... I think Join Me is very underrated...
Just kidding lol
But seriously, I think Heaven Tonightis such a beautiful song, Ville's voice is just perfect and fine on this song. I love the melody, it always makes me think of Summer for some reason. and I think it is highly underrated.
Overrated, I think its Wings of a Butterfly, I like the song but I can do without them performing it for awhile tbh.
So what do you guys think is HIM's most underrated/overrated song?
And I think Dark Light [the album] is incredibly underrated, too. But that's another discussion. ------------ I so agree with you. I think people naturally want to beat up on that one since it was their first album released under the American record label but I love it.
For me, the most overrated is Burried Alive By Love, I just don't get the HIM feeling when I listen to the song, it could be easily a song of some other band.
Underrated, that would be the Path. It's a beautiful song, there is a part that always brings tears to my eyes, no matter how many times I've listened to it. It's sad that they hardly ever performed it live, such a waste of a good song.
Venus (in our blood) is one of my favorite HIM songs that they have never played live as far as I know. Unfortunate for a big song that continues to give me chills no matter how many times I listen to it. So underrated!
Venus(In Our Blood) is DEFINITELY their best song so far in my opinion, and it wasn't even released on the standard issue version of Dark Light. I heard about 2 years after I bought the album & had to find & download it. Personally I think Funeral Of Hearts & Rip Out The Wings Of A Butterfly are both massively overrated. Funeral Of Hearts is over played and hence has lost it's charm. Rip Out The Wings Of A Butterfly didn't really capture the essence of HIM for me, and I think it was a bit to "try-hard" poppy shit, if you get my meaning...
Most overrated? that would be Rip Out the Wings of a Butterfly. Don't get me wrong..I love that song. But still, it gets too much attention. hahah.
Most underrated would be.. Resurrection, Sigium Diaboli, Beyond Redemption, and For You. The last two may be a bit better known..but I still say they're underrated. lol. :3
Having seen them a few times it gets predictable in that they play the same songs over and over not that I don't mind, love them all but it would be great if they played songs that haven't been performed for ages. Every gig has BABL, The Sacrement, Funeral of Hearts, Soul on Fire, Wings of a Butterfly, Killing Loneliness etc. Would be wonderful if they dusted off The Path, Circle of Fear, Play Dead (always makes me cry for some reason) anything really as long as its not those core songs.
Yeah, I think a lot of bands fall into this routine of wanting to please the crowd with the "favorites" (and forget that the fans typically have those stockpiled in cds and mp3s). But, I suppose those songs get the audience revved up, rather than trying to figure out what's playing.
I love Tool, and I'm fortunate enough to get to see them again in July, but I can pretty much bet on what 80-90% of the songs will be. Maynard, I'm sure, will throw in a few curveballs, though.
Interesting question. I have to go back and check out the songs, don´t have them all in my mind. Join me and Wings of a Butterfly are great, but not the best of HIM. There are much more wonderful songs.
actually, one of my LEAST favourite songs in the whole world is actually a HIM song.... don't close you heart it's terribly and absolutel rubbish and i will not even begin to talk about that
ALTHOUGH one of my all time HIM songs... oh boy, it's a tie and my two favourite song in the world The Path and Love's Requiem both tell such beautiful stories with beautiful composition, i love it!
Cyanide Sun Play Dead The Cage Dark Ligth Drunk On Shadows Endless Dark This Fortress Of Tears The Path The Funeral Of Hearts Close To The Flame Love You Like I Do When Love And Death Embrace Bury Me Deep Inside Your Heart I Love You Gone With The Sin (live RAR 2001) Heaven Tonigth Sigillum Diaboli The Phantom Gate Beyond Redemption
Are my favourite, underrated songs. They all have some special meaning or memory for me. Like Gone With The Sin, is an amazing song, and the live version of that from Rock Am Ring 2001, was what made me fall completly in love with the band (and Ville).
This list of songs would be the perfect setlist for me ^^
You know when you think about it, HIM doesn't even have any BAD songs. How many bands can you say that about? Even the best groups have a their far share of stinkers.
I think Ville is a very underrated song writer. Of course WE all love him and appreciate his talent but I wish he got more respect.
Love´s requiem Heaven tonight Sweet Pandemonium I love you For you
Most overrated:
Killing Loneliness Wings of a Butterfly Buried alive by love The sacrament (there are other songs on LM, I´ve heard that one too often) Wicked Game (not qualifying as a real HIM-song, but , ehm, it´s getting boring)
I think Sweet Pandemonium is underrated. It's one of my all time favourite HIM songs. It never gets played live, nor does it get much attention. Which is sad, because it sounds awesome live.
As far as overrated, Rip Out the Wings of a Butterfly. It's also overplayed.
I've always absolutely loved Love You Like I Do but they never played it live or did much of anything with it.
I think their most overrated song was probably Killing Loneliness. I also wouldn't miss Wicked Game if it disappeared from their set list because they do it every single time.
Under ratred and what I'd really love to hear live would include:-
Our Diabolikal Rapture Anything from RR other than Razorblade Kiss and Join me [love both but something different would be amazing!] Sigillum Diabolli Lose You Tonight Cirlce of Fear Sweet pandamonium The Path Dark Light [track] Cyanide Sun Again In Love and Lonely Loves Requiem You are the One
However, I think Beautiful is an extremely underrated song. It's simple, but yet so amazingly - well, as the title says - beautiful. I really miss the DSABH album.. It's sad they don't perform its songs anymore, cause they're really great and usually get me in a good mood too.
Other songs I'd love to hear/hear more often include: Our Diabolikal Rapture The Beginning Of The End For You I Love You Resurrection Heaven Tonight The Path Sweet Pandemonium Play Dead The Cage Poison Heart Cyanide Sun Love's Requiem Under The Rose etc, etc... I could go on all night..
Well, who knows what they'll play next. Hopefully some rare ones (+the new ones, of course!). I was really surprised to hear When Love And Death Embrace at Helldone 2008/09. Didn't expect it at all.
Overrated Join Me Your Sweet 666 (I never listen:/) Killing Loneliness (I never listen :/) Right here in my arms (I can take it :O) Bleed well (I don't like this song:/) Razorblade kiss
Underrated Cyanide Sun Gone With the Sin Close to the flame Bury Me Deep Inside Your Heart Soul on fire One last Time
hmm well underated would have to be all the Greatest Love Songs 666 album and " I love you (prelude to tragedy)" if they played that live id just die of happiness ^u^
overrated:;| everything from darklight............ EVERYTHING O_______<'!!!!!
tough question....hmm, forgive me but i'm gonna have to be lengthy with this
with their first EP, i think they should have released Dark Secret Love (seriously, i listen to that on repeat), but i can see how doing Wicked Game would create more buzz for them, i just don't think its should have been done 3 times
Greatest Love Songs: No brainer, For You and Our Dibolikal Rapture should have gotten more attention. But again, they went with Wicked Game.
Razorblade Romance: I think they got it right with Join Me, Gone With the Sin, and Right Here in My Arms, but instead of Poison Girl and another video for Wicked Game, they should have made on for Bury Me Deep inside your Heart
Deep Shadows: Again, they got it right with Pretending, Close to the Flame and Heartache Every Moment, but come on! What about Love You Like I Do! That song is sex!!!
Love Metal: Loved Funeral of Hearts, The Sacrement, and Buried Alive By Love, but Soul on Fire, The Path, and Fortress of Tears were more my personal favorites.
Dark Light: Ok, I hate it when I ask someone if they've heard of HIM and their first response is "I love Wings of a Butterfly". this was not their best song and it shouldn't have gotten so much buzz. that being said, i loved Killing Loneliness, but felt that Vampire Heart was ignored when it should have shined
Venus Doom: Ok, Passion's Killing Floor. They lent it to the Transformers movie (even though i never heard it), but that was as far as they went with it sadly. I'm all for Bleed Well, but instead of The Kiss of Dawn, they should have done a video for Cyanide Sun or Love in Cold Blood.

Now, underrated I think is definitely I Love You. It's an amazing song, and I've only heard them playing it once, which is a damn shame.
And I think Dark Light [the album] is incredibly underrated, too. But that's another discussion.
